The idea for a collection of writings on territorial conflict was first suggested to me by Glenn Palmer. Through his support and that of Stuart Bremer, a special issue on territorial conflict appeared in the journal Conflict Management and Peace Science in 1996. Five of the articles from that special issue are reprinted, some in revised form, in this book.

Using geographical information systems (GIS) analysis, he presents what may be the first empirical test of Lewis Richardson's proposition that states pursue a goal of geographical "compactness"borders of nearly round or rectangular shape, with short borders spread evenly around a central region, thereby making it easier to defendthrough territorial expansion. This proposition suggests that some territorial disputes have their origins in the expansionist desires of states that wish to reconfigure their borders to enhance national security.
